Playzone Europe

January 6, 2024 - May 31, 2024

In the spring of 2024, Belgium assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union. To mark this occasion, Mechelen hosted a grand cultural and social festival called 'Construct Europe.'

As part of this city-wide festival, the Toy Museum Mechelen presented the exhibition 'PlayZone Europe.'

Discover Europe through the toy collection at Toy Museum Mechelen. Take a tour of the toys and games from various European member states, from Denmark's iconic building blocks to Hungary's Rubik's Cube. Through stories from Mechelen residents who migrated from other European countries, learn about how they played in their homeland and which play traditions they brought with them. The exhibition concludes with a showcase of what the European Union does to ensure toy safety and how toys are tested before hitting the market. Together, we will reflect on how we can further improve play and toys across Europe.

Knights & princesses

Girls play with dolls, boys play soldier. It's a cliché that has persisted for centuries. The world of knights and princesses has long been an immensely popular theme in toys. Manufacturers capitalize on the stereotypical preferences of girls for princesses and boys for knights. What does this say about contemporary gender roles?

Well-known toy brands like LEGO, Playmobil, and Barbie also follow this trend, offering various sets of castles, knights, and princesses. In this exhibition, we showcase loans from these brands along with a significant selection from our own collection. Come and discover all this and more at our 'Knights & Princesses' expo.

Focus expo: on road trip with vintage cars

December 5, 2020 - September 29, 2024

Join us on a European road trip through the extensive collection of miniature cars owned by Eddie De Cuyper.

His collection features a combination of toy cars (Dinky Toys, Norev, Schuco, etc.) and genuine collector's items. We begin with some special series based on Belgian comic books: Tintin, Spirou, and Blake & Mortimer. Our journey continues through France, Italy, Germany, and Sweden, then crosses the channel to the United Kingdom! Along the way, discover the incredibly beautiful miniature cars and the personal story of Eddie De Cuyper.

My Little Pony: 40 years of magic

June 24, 2022 - February 26, 2023

The exhibition My Little Pony: 40 Years of Magic takes you through the history of My Little Pony from the creation of this toy line to the present day.

Discover the predecessor 'My Pretty Pony' from 1981. Be enchanted by the fantasy worlds of the colorful ponies produced by the American toy manufacturer Hasbro since 1982.

Thanks to the collection of collector Mande Walschot, you'll experience a nostalgic journey and see the ponies evolve over time. Follow the ponies as they continue their adventures on screen. These popular toy animals soon made their debut in numerous TV series and films.

The interactive play elements make the My Little Pony expo a playful experience full of magic for the whole family. At the end of the exhibition, you can enjoy the play area featuring the latest My Little Pony innovations. Undoubtedly a magical visit!
