Circus & fairs
During
150 years both circus and fairs attracted children enormously. Toy manufacturers
saw the possibilities. In 1903 the first movable wooden clowns and animals
from the famous American ‘Humpty Dumpty Circus’ appeared.
In Europe lots of circus toys in tin were manufactured. Not only the classic
merry-go-round, but also many other fair attractions lent themselves perfectly
to miniature copies. Movement and modeling are combined in ghost castles,
dodgem cars, caterpillars and many other attractions.
Although these pieces of art were not always meant as toys, they belong
to the play- and living world of children. That’s why they deserved
a special place in the Toy Museum.
