MechaniCAL and tinplate toys

Shortly after 1812, when the first tin cans appeared on the market, the very first tin toys were made. Tin and mechanics proved to be an ideal combination. Toys moved automatically. Children could even learn to type on miniature typewriters, copies of the adult typewriters that appeared in 1890.

Because of the severe safety legislation on toys, tin is today hardly being used for toys. Nevertheless the tin toy period gave us some of the most original and innovating toys: from mechanic tops to robots.
