TraditionAL CHILREN'S GAMES & Pieter BruegHel
Step
literally into the painting “The Children’s Games” by
Pieter Brueghel and go 450 years back in time. The painting is elaborated
in three dimensions. Here you can discover the toys where children used
to play with outside.
Starting with the very first marbles and knucklebones, we end with a pair
of skates made from the bones of a horse. Also bow shooting, ninepins,
darts (‘vogelenpik’), dice (‘pietjesbak’) and
other traditional folk games are displayed in this section.
The category ‘toys moved by leg power’ includes a large collection
of toys with two, three or four wheels, propelled by children’s
legs. The step disappeared for a long time but experienced a comeback
since a couple of years. You can even admire the bike of prince Leopold
(the later king Leopold III).
